In September 2017, I started a body transformation journey where I ended up losing 25 kg of weight and completely transforming my body and getting into the best shape of my life.

Along that journey, I saw that there were so many parallels between a body transformation and a business transformation. The lessons I learned very often overlapped with one another, and I want to share some of those lessons with you today.

1. Have Ruthless Consistency

First and foremost, it’s all about consistency, but even more so ruthless consistency as my trainer says. Sometimes you’re going to find yourself in the gym and the business doing the same thing over and over and over again, whether it’s the same exercise, the same number of reps, the same weight or eating the same food in order to achieve a certain body look or certain physique. In business, you might be publishing blog posts for a year without seeing any results. You might be going to networking events for a while or using social media. You might be doing these things over and over again without seeing clear results straight away, but knowing that your consistency eventually will pay off because one day you’re going to wake up, as I did, and I was able to lift the weight that I was targeting. I was starting to see the difference on the scales in my weight and in the shape of my body.

Ruthless consistency for 18-months

It’s the same in business. It’s the consistency that always wins. You start seeing results. So the first lesson I learned between a body transformation and a business transformation was ruthless consistency is what gets you results.

2. Know Your End Goal

The second lesson I learned was to know where you’re going. To put it simply, have a goal. I see so many people in the gym aimlessly wandering around, going from machine to machine, from barbell to barbell, from dumbbell to dumbbell not really knowing what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, what difference it’s making to their body or to their training.

And I see that really often in business as well. People going to events and using social media without any real target or goals, not knowing where they’re going in business. They end up aimlessly wandering around for years and years and not seeing any results. And then after five years, they say ‘well that business didn’t work‘ and it’s the same in the gym – people train for years and they don’t get the body shape that they want. Then they say ‘well, that didn’t work for me‘.

In your business, you need to know your financial goals. You need to know how many website visitors you want, how many leads you want every month, how many sales you want every month. In the gym, for me, I knew exactly what weight I wanted to be because once I knew the level I wanted to be at, I can reverse engineer how to get there and ask for help on what I needed to do in order to achieve those goals.

3. Self-made Does Not Exist

That brings me nicely on to the third lesson where I can draw a direct parallel between a body transformation and a business transformation, which is to get help. There is no such thing as self-made. No-one’s done it before and nobody ever will become the person they want to be or build the business they want to build by themselves. You need a coach or a mentor, someone who’s been there and done it to tell you what to do, when to do it and how to do it. In the gym, the obvious choice is a personal trainer. I trained with RNT Fitness, specifically with Akash who told me eat this, eat this much of it, go to the gym on this day, do this in the gym and keep doing that and repeating that and you will see results. And that’s exactly what I did and that’s exactly what happened – I saw results.

In business, it’s the same thing. If you are a startup or you’re not quite seeing the results that you’re expecting, get a coach, get a mentor, get someone who’s been there and done it to tell you where you’re going wrong, because they’re probably going to be able to see it much clearer than you are.

So those are the three parallels I drew from a body transformation to a business transformation. Not only was I able to get into the best shape of my life, but I was also able to grow my business at the same time while I was following these exact same principles: ruthless consistency, having a goal, and having someone help you achieve that goal.
